Island Adventures in Outdoor Learning

paddle boarders on the kiawah riverGiven the new normal of virtual learning and remote work, families are no longer location-bound by brick-and-mortar classrooms and offices. The upside to this situation is that parents and children can achieve career and scholastic success from anywhere—including Kiawah Island.

To enhance your children’s distance learning through fun, hands-on experiences, Kiawah Island Golf Resort has developed a variety of “field trips” designed to improve brains, bodies and moods—while maintaining safe social distancing—including:

Junior Ecologist: Dolphins and Friends

Your children will join a naturalist on a Dolphin Encounter—either by kayak or motorboat—and get an immersive education on these fascinating full-time residents of the Kiawah River. They will also study the island’s intricate system of creeks and marshes as well as all of the amazing creatures who call them home. Salt marshes are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth and a vital part of the Lowcountry.

Junior Zoologist: Kiawah Creatures

Guests of all ages will gain an appreciation for Kiawah Island’s native wildlife from our professional naturalists, who genuinely enjoy sharing their knowledge. From a safe distance, your family will observe and learn about the amazing and often misunderstood American alligator, one of the island’s apex predators, in its natural habitat. You can also explore remote habitats to seek out dozens of bird species, both large and small, and learn about the natural history of our avian wildlife.

Physical Education: Paddle, Pedal and Play

Everyone in the family can experience a new pursuit they have always been curious about or hone skills in a sport they already know. Learn effective paddleboard or kayak techniques with our counselors or test and improve your marksmanship during an archery lesson. Take a low-pressure family tennis or golf lesson with one of our professionals, where the emphasis is on pleasure rather than perfection. Master your breathing to create body awareness, calm the mind and build strength and flexibility during a yoga class. For fun, self-guided exploration and fitness, bike our 30-plus miles of paved trails and 10-mile beach. While exploring, look for observation towers dotting the island to gain a bird’s-eye view of marshes, rivers, ponds and maritime forest.

Plein Air Painting (and More!)

Foster your child’s creative spirit at our outdoor, open-air art studio. Students of all ages can sample a variety of fun-filled arts and crafts, including pottery, mosaics, glass fusing, and canvas and wood painting. Our art instructors are happy to accommodate any skill level and help students gain confidence in expressing themselves artistically.

When you are ready to relocate your distance learning to Kiawah Island, you have your choice of accommodations.
