This is a fantastic way to observe and learn about these amazing and often misunderstood animals in their natural habitat.

Back Island BirdingBack Island Birding From tiny hummingbirds and vibrant warblers to majestic birds of prey, the lowcountry of South Carolina is famous for its diversity of birds during all seasons. We’ll use the van to reach several remote island habitats to seek out dozens of bird species, both large and small, and learn about the natural history of our avian wildlife. If you are new to birding join us on a Birding for Beginners walking tour.

Back Island BirdingWildlife Photography Tour Join naturalist and photographer, Jake Zadik, as we explore remote parts of the island in search of some wild subjects. Bring your cameras as you learn about different camera techniques and lens selections when photographing nature.

what-is-that-waterKiawah Creatures Join a naturalist on a nature walk around Kiawah’s best habitats! You will see and learn a bit about everything nature-related on Kiawah during this tour. From alligators to native plants and butterflies, to local bird species and freshwater turtles! Make sure to bring your cameras and binoculars!

  • Price: $12, 1 hour. Recommended for ages 7 and up. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Night Beach WalkNight Beach Walk Come join a naturalist on an evening beach walk to learn all about the biology of our native Loggerhead Sea Turtles and other nocturnal beach goers! Once the sun sets you will discover a nocturnal world by listening and searching for wildlife such as owls, alligators and bats. (Live turtle nesting unlikely).

  • Price: $15 per person, 1.5 hours. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

winter wonders walkPollination Exploration Join a naturalist in this family-friendly tour to search the Sanctuary gardens for seasonal butterflies. We’ll use nets to catch and gently examine butterflies, and learn what resources these beautiful winged creatures use to live and breed on Kiawah. Stroller accessible. Ocean SeiningOcean Seining Have you ever wondered what swims with you in the sea? Our ocean seining program will give you an upclose introduction. After some initial beachcombing, prepare to get wet as we pull the net through the water to discover life below the breakers.

A Naturalist will lead you on a walk through various types of habitats to learn which birds are found where and what to look for when identifying each species.

  • Price: $15, 1.5 hours. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

sunset-cycleHistorical Sunset Cycle After a long day of fun in the sun, treat yourself to a gently paced biking tour with some on-foot exploration. Have you ever wondered where the name ‘Kiawah’ came from, or when Kiawah actually became an Island? This tour will explore the history, ecology, and beautiful views of this unique island. Timed with the sunset, we will be able to enjoy relaxing landscapes to escort us back to the Nature Center.

  • Price: $15/person. Does NOT include bike rental.
  • Duration: 1.5 Hrs
  • Recommended ages 13 and up. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

wildlifeWildlife in the Wetlands A Naturalist favorite: this tour will take you on leisurely bike ride to discover the fascinating wildlife that inhabits Kiawah’s diverse ecosystems. You’ll gain a better understanding of the beaches, dunes, maritime forest, ponds, and salt marshes that stretch across the island, while learning each ecosystem’s unique characteristics.

  • Price: $20/person. Does NOT include bike rental.
  • Duration: 2 Hrs
  • Carts, training wheels and tag-alongs are not permitted.
  • Children must be 10 years or older. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

wildlifeCaptain Sam’s Eco-Cycle Join a naturalist as we bike to the end of the island in search of birds, beach critters, and our resident bottlenose dolphins. We will meet with the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network to learn about research being conducted on teh island and how you can safely view these incredible creatures. A portion of the proceeds from this tour is donated to LMMN. This can be a strenuous trip.
