Back Island Birding

From tiny hummingbirds and vibrant warblers to majestic birds of prey, the lowcountry of South Carolina is famous for its diversity of birds during all seasons. We’ll use the van to reach several remote island habitats to seek out dozens of bird species, both large and small, and learn about the natural history of our avian wildlife. If you are new to birding join us on a Birding for Beginners walking tour.

Price: $60 per person; 3 hours.
Must be at least 14 years old.

Gator Walk

hatchling gatorThe American Alligator is a guest favorite and one of our most intriguing wildlife species. Learn about what makes these ancient creatures so unique in the animal kingdom. We’ll visit some gator habitats and learn how they survive and thrive on Kiawah.

Price: $20, 1 hour.
Recommended for ages 6 and up.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Kiawah Creatures

Corn SnakeJoin a naturalist on a nature walk around Kiawah’s best habitats! You will see and learn a bit about everything nature-related on Kiawah during this tour. From alligators to native plants and butterflies, to local bird species and freshwater turtles. Make sure to bring your cameras and binoculars!

Price: $20, 1 hour.
Recommended for ages 6 and up.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Night Beach Walk

Come join a naturalist on an evening beach walk to learn all about the biology of our native Loggerhead Sea Turtles and other nocturnal beach goers! Once the sun sets you will discover a nocturnal world by listening and searching for wildlife such as owls, alligators and beach treasures. (Live turtle nesting unlikely).

Price: $20 per person, 1 hour.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Ocean Seining

SeiningHave you ever wondered what swims with you in the sea? Our ocean seining program will give you an upclose introduction. After some initial beachcombing, prepare to get wet as you help us pull the net through the water to discover life below the breakers.

Bird Walk at Mingo Point

Mingo Point is a unique spot situated between gorgeous views of the salt marsh along the Kiawah River and the maritime forest of Kiawah Island. Join a naturalist on this 1-hour birding tour to get a taste of the great birds Kiawah Island has to offer all in one place, from flocks of singing red-wing blackbirds to wood storks and egrets wading in the pluff mud along the edge of the marsh.

Price: $20 per person, 1 hour. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.


Birding for Beginners

Beginner BirdingBeginning your bird watching endeavor? This walking tour is just what you need to learn the birding basics. A Naturalist will lead you on a walk through various types of habitats in the park to learn which birds are found where and what to look for when identifying each species.

Price: $20, 1.5 hours. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.


Bird Walk at the Ocean Course

Black-necked StiltThe Ocean Course is home to some of the richest bird habitats on Kiawah Island. Freshwater ponds, salt marshes, and the beach come together to create an incredibly diverse habitat for shorebirds, wading birds, and songbirds, among many others. Join a naturalist on this unique birdwatching tour to learn about the bird species that make Kiawah Island such a special place.

Price: $40, 2 hours. Recommended for ages 14 and up.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Wildlife in the Wetlands

wildlife in wetlandsA Naturalist favorite: this tour will take you on leisurely bike ride to discover the fascinating wildlife that inhabits Kiawah’s diverse ecosystems. You’ll gain a better understanding of the beaches, dunes, maritime forest, ponds, and salt marshes that stretch across the island, while learning each ecosystem’s unique characteristics.

Price: $40/person. Does NOT include bike rental.
Duration: 2 Hrs
Carts, training wheels and tag-alongs are not permitted.
Recommended for ages 8 and up. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
