Kiawah’s John Ondo Appointed South Carolina Chef Ambassador
Kiawah Island’s John Ondo has been appointed a 2022 South Carolina Chef Ambassador by Governor Henry McMaster. Chef Ondo’s appointment was announced by the governor at a special press conference held at the South Carolina State House on January 5. Ondo serves as chef at The Ocean Course clubhouse, overseeing kitchens for both The Atlantic Room and The Ryder Cup Bar.
In his role as South Carolina Chef Ambassador, John will primarily represent the historically and culturally rich foodways of the South Carolina Lowcountry. To serve in this enviable role, John was selected by the governor from a highly qualified slate of nominees.
During his culinary career, John has worked tirelessly to support seasonally fresh agriculture by establishing lasting relationships with local farmers, fishermen, oystermen and shrimpers. He has also helped to mentor and develop a new generation of culinary talent in our region by sharing his extensive knowledge and experience while an adjunct professor at the Culinary Institute of Charleston.
Throughout 2022, Discover South Carolina and South Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Certified South Carolina Grown program will feature John and the other three chefs at high-profile signature events such as:
- Southeastern Wildlife Expo (SEWE) Charleston
- Charleston Wine + Food Festival
- Euphoria Greenville
- On Media Missions, Photo and Video Shoots, Interviews and Cooking Demos
At each of these events, Chef Ondo, as South Carolina Chef Ambassador, will showcase the state as the leading Culinary Capital of the South.
