Kiawah Friendship Cup 2010
February 25 – 28, 2010
The year’s first major wasn’t played amongst azaleas and dogwoods in eastern Georgia. The winning team hoisted the trophy in victory over a month prior to the tournament in Augusta along the shimmering South Carolina coast in late February. Tom Crosby and Randy Jones added their names to the coveted Friendship Cup trophy when they captured the fourth annual championship on Kiawah Island Golf Resort with a winning score of 4 under par.
It was a week to remember, opening Thursday night with a sumptuous reception and dinner in the award-winning Ocean Room restaurant in The Sanctuary. Remy USA provided signature cocktails while The Ocean Room chefs manned dinner stations around the restaurant. President of Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Roger Warren, welcomed the 2010 participants.
Following dinner, participants proceeded to the hospitality room where they enjoyed live music provided by Mark Schuler, cigar rolling and tasting, more cocktails by Republic National Distributing, raffle prizes and playing The Ocean Course on EA Sport’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game on Wii games. They also participated in a putting contest and many got caricature drawings by a talented local artist.
Friday
Friday morning, tee times began at 9:00 at Turtle Point. Once again, Republic National Distributing stepped up to the plate, providing Bloody Marys and cocktails. Harley Davidson provided a cycle for a one-in-hole on No. 7.
Friday night was the past champions dinner in the private Wine Room at The Ocean Room restaurant. Winners of the first three Friendship Cups as well as the Pub Cup (tournament within a tournament for members of the media who participate in the event) enjoyed a three-course dinner with wine pairings provided by Ben Arnold Beverage Company. The previous years champions were presented with their Friendship Cup jackets and, as in years past, the winners of the last years event stayed in the Presidential Suite for the duration of this years tournament. The rest of the participants enjoyed another night in the hospitality room with Woodford Reserve providing cocktails and an exclusive bourbon tasting. More raffle prizes were awarded with music by local jazz guitarist Nikolai Svishev.
Saturday
Saturday participants took on The Ocean Course. Once again, Republic National provided bloodys as well as dark and stormys with rum. Memento photos were taken before participants teed off. Following the round, stories were swapped and cocktails enjoyed in The Ocean Course’s Ryder Cup Bar.
That evening the awards reception and dinner honored Messrs Crosby and Jones but not before tournament chairman, Tom Bewley, poked some fun at the challenges facing Tiger Woods (a no-show at the seasons first and most important major). Entertainment included music by the William Duo and the Have-nots comedy troupe. Prizes, including trips to some of America’s finest resorts were presented. Then, participants retired to one last night in the hospitality room with music by the Williams Duo.
