Try the Kiawah Island Triathlon

triathlon bike raceIf you’ve ever flirted with the idea of testing your endurance, the Kiawah Island Triathlon is a great way to do so in an organized setting. Scheduled for Sunday October 13 beginning at 7:30 AM, the event combines a 0.7-mile open-water swim in the Atlantic Ocean just off the beach in front of The Sanctuary, a 25.1-mile bike race around the island and a 6.1-mile run. All interested athletes who will have turned at least 17 by December 31 are warmly welcomed to participate.

The event is a USA Triathlon-sanctioned intermediate competition. USAT is the official governing body for multisport events and part of the U.S. Olympic Committee. But you don’t have to be an Olympics-class athlete to participate. The Kiawah Island Marathon is ideal for beginners as well as experienced triathletes.

But if you feel a little trepidation about the open-water swim, come the Sunday before the triathlon, October 6, for a practice swim. Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s aquatics manager will share techniques and tips specific for navigating the resort’s open waters. A group open-water swim follows the clinic held at Night Heron Park Pool, providing attendees the advantage of a realistic feel — and boosted confidence — before the real deal.

The bike course encompasses the entire length of Kiawah Island. The run course primarily traverses well-shaded terrain through maritime forest. The run and bike portions provide excellent views of Kiawah Island’s maritime forest, salt marshes and beachfront (view the Course Map). But with elevation changes of less than 18 feet throughout the entire course, triathletes will find the course approachable, even for athletes attempting their first triathlon. And don’t let equipment hinder you: beginners can rent either an aluminum or carbon bike for the day or the week (helmets required).

Night Heron Park serves as the event transition zone. Encompassing 21 acres, the event- and family-friendly park provides an ideal spot for spectating and cheering on your favorite competitor.

Registration includes a short sleeve race shirt, a swimmer’s cap, a finisher’s medal, course support, and food and entertainment at the finish line party. Visit the Registration Page to sign up while spots last.
