Extreme Fitness On Golfing Kiawah Island: The Ocean Course
Kiawah Islands boasts over 90 holes of championship golf, but today I am focused on a specific 18: The Ocean Course. Golf Digest awarded it the “Toughest Golf Course in the United States and it is one of four golf courses to be used for all three of the PGA of America’s major championships. The Ocean Course has been on my bucket list for many years and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from every hole. Here are my top five tips for tackling The Ocean Course:
1. Pick the appropriate tees
The Ocean Course is a challenging course and that is putting it lightly. This is not the time to try to impress your friends with playing the furthest tees. Play the tees for your level based not just on yardage but on the conditions, you will thank me later.
2. Honor the wind
When you step up to the tee at hole 6 you are about to endure an 8 hole journey of seriously intense and unpredictable wind. It is well known that you can experience an 8-club difference on holes depending upon the direction and strength of the wind. I highly recommend enlisting a caddy for help when it comes to the wind, they can be a huge asset.
3. Keep it in play
This should go without saying, but keep it in play. Getting off the fairway can be a dangerous expedition here, so go for the smart shot not the hero shot.
4. Get Techy
Download The Kiawah Island Ocean Course App for your phone that includes a GPS enabled yardage guide, flyover visuals and other functionality.
5. Hit Up the Ryder Cup Bar
After your humbling round of golf head over to the Ryder Cup Bar for a fabulous meal, cocktail and view of the 18th green. It is one of the best spots on the island to take it all in and savor your day on the links. My pick: The Wanamaker Cocktail and Fish Taco.
Fitness Tip: For an added fitness bonus, walk the entire course and log
My day at the Ocean Course was fabulous and was bar none one of my best golf experiences to date. The service and quality of the course was fantastic and I can’t wait to play all the other courses Kiawah has to offer. The Ocean Course is challenging and one of the most visually intimating courses I have ever played, but that is part of the allure. Make sure to add this to your next adventure golf trip, it is worth every penny and you will not be disappointed.
