Volunteer Opportunity: Oyster Reef Restoration
June 12 @ 9:45 am - 1:00 pm
complimentary- This event has passed.
The Kiawah Conservancy and Kiawah Island Golf Resort have partnered with DNR’s South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement Program (SCORE) to begin a new restoration project on Kiawah Island. We are in need of volunteers to help construct the Manufactured Wire Reefs (MWR) that will be installed within the marsh at Mingo Point. MWR are an alternative substrate for oyster larvae to land and grow on. Our goal is to build 100 wire reefs to be installed later this year! Click HERE to view a video of the reef building process.
Volunteers will help to cut, bend, and fasten galvanized wire to form a reef structure using power tools. This hands-on project requires standing for the duration of the event, lifting heavy materials, and is physically demanding. Close-toed shoes are mandatory. Safety gear, sunscreen and bug spray is provided. Please bring your own reusable water bottle as a water refill station will be on site. Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in.
