Jr. Naturalist Series

The Jr. Naturalist program is a fun, hands-on approach to exploring nature. Each individual class can be taken on its own. However, if you take all 5 classes, you can become an official Kiawah Island Jr. Naturalist and receive a free Rite in the Rain notebook to be just like your favorite Naturalist! Each session will target a different area of wildlife and give each child a better appreciation of our native species.
Children must be 7-12 years old; parents must be present to sign kids in and out, before and after the trip. Cost: $25/session (Marsh Ecology is $40). 24 hour cancellation policy. 2 person minimum. Reservations required: 843.768.6001
Monday | 4:30pm-6pm
What does a turtle eat? How do snakes keep warm? Join our Naturalists for a behind-the-scenes look at the daily life of the Nature Center’s critters. Learn what these animals need to survive in the wild, and how our Naturalists work to meet their needs here in captivity. Help us prepare food for our animals, and get hands-on care experience by making sure the enclosures are kept up and the animals are healthy. $25/ child
Tuesday | 1pm-2:30pm
The salt marsh is an ecosystem that is thriving with wildlife to be seen and discovered. First, we’ll learn the different zones of the saltmarsh before we take a motorboat ride to get an up close experience with fascinating animals that inhabit the marsh. From crabs to sponges and even some oysters, these creatures are sure to keep everyone wanting to see more. $40/ child
Wednesday | 4:30pm-6pm
Have you ever thought about what Kiawah was like before colonization? With our Naturalists as your guides, step back in time and learn to interact with your environment the way the Kiawah Natives did! Learn about the rich history of Native Americans and take a nature walk to see how they used their resources. Get creative with several crafts for a fun, hands on approach to Native American culture!
Maritime Forest Meander (NEW)
Thursday | 4:30pm-6pm
Who’s ready for a maritime forest adventure? The maritime forest is a unique ecosystem that makes up a large part of Kiawah Island. Naturalists will take kids on a short van ride to The Preserve where we will hike and explore pristine parts of the island. Here, we will discover different plants and animals and learn about factors of the forest, their importance, and how they work together. $25/child
Friday | 4:30pm-6pm
Calling all fledgling birders! Have you ever wondered what types of feathered friends are flying around you? Who is the red one? What about the ones on the beach? In this class, you will explore various habitats to learn about the most common birds on Kiawah. Equipped with a pair of binoculars and a bird-bingo board game, you’re sure to be a junior birder in no time! $25/child
