Many in the southeast visit Charleston, SC but don’t realize the beautiful resort, Kiawah, is just an additional 30 minute drive. Many golfers love Kiawah for the majestic courses, but there is lots to do besides that. There’s fishing, dining, alligator tours for kids and outstanding dining. We arrived on Easter to find families enjoying the buffet in the main dining room. Besides lots of tempting carb options, there were seafood delights and even a carving station. Kids aren’t neglected either with their own “playroom” with fun characters, coloring tables and story time.
Of course, for a more elegant affair, dine in the Atlantic room. Besides a sinfully delicious boozy start to your brunch a la custom Bloody Mary’s, the array of options is phenomenal. Think truffled mac n cheese, lump crab, fresh oysters.
Well-appointed doesn’t really begin to describe the guest rooms. The large four post beds don’t look crowded in the oversized rooms. Plantation shutters open up from the bath tub to look into the room. Luxury linens and bath goods don’t hurt either.
For families, the main pool provides all the action you will need to keep the kiddies occupied for an afternoon. Only steps away, is the adults only infinity pool (below right). Even though it is rather close to the family pool, there is enough separation to block out any noise from kiddos. Included in hotel rate is towel service (they will make up the lounge chair for you complete with fitted towel. Tip: Make sure to inquire about any special events for which the area might be closed off.
If the guys go out golfing, ladies will enjoy a day at the Kiawah Spa, awarded a Forbes Five Star Award. Get a massage, facial or simply get dolled up for dinner with a makeup, manicure and pedicure. Me? I’m looking forward to my next trip to the Kiawah Spa for a Ocean Fossil Fusion – an exfoliation followed by mud treatment, then massage. Just want to enjoy the tranquil spa? Guests of the hotel can pay a small fee of $15 per day to enjoy the spa for the day which includes light sauna, steam room, vitality mineral whirlpool, locker room amenities and relaxation lounges.
A fun family activity is the alligator tour. The hour long tour is just long enough to keep little ones entertained not bored. Not only does this give tour goers the opportunity to see some of the reptilian residents, but you’ll get more acquainted with the grounds too.
Couples will love biking along Kiawah’s resort and exploring all there is to see on the island. After an afternoon of biking, nothing beats the sunset cruise to end the day before heading off to dinner.
Speaking of dinner, everyone will definitely want to make plans to visit the Mingo Point Oyster Roast which takes place Mondays during summer. Get ready to get down and dirty as you shuck your own oysters. If oysters aren’t your thing, don’t worry, there is plenty of barbecue and other goodies at the buffet to fill your belly. The Low country experience even includes live music and is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences of the trip!
For a special evening, visit the award- winning Ocean room. This AAA designated restaurant features craft Cocktails (Try The Beet Goes On. Don’t let the beet juice scare you!), steaks and terrific views. Expect to spend about $100+ per person. Give their unique Filet a try – Chef tells us it is a cross between a filet and ribeye. So you get the portion of a filet with the fuller flavor of a ribeye.
Sustainable, local foods aren’t just buzz words around Kiawah. A visit to Cherry Point, where most if their seafood is sourced, shows how committed they are to this. Ambrose Farm, a supplier of produce to Kiawah, is another spot where anyone can visit for a glimpse of farm fresh goods. On our visit, we witnessed the many families trek over to pick their own strawberries, which you pay for by the basket.
As summer winds down and fall is upon us, now is the perfect to head out to Kiawah Resort with the family, your better half, or pals. As you can see, you can occupy yourselves with the many activities the resort offers or kick back and relax with fine dining, creative cocktails and relaxing spa and pool time.
