Kiawah Island’s beach: 7th Heaven

Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island, SC

“The loggerhead sea turtles have excellent taste in real estate.”

That’s what Lori Rackl, a Chicago Sun-Times reporter had to say about her recent beach vacation escapade to Kiawah Island and we couldn’t agree more. With a beach that stretches for miles (10 miles more precisely) and the water a football field away at low tide, can you blame the turtles? And now Stephen “Dr. Beach” Leatherman has named Kiawah Island’s Beachwalker Park among the top 10 beaches in the United States.

Ultimately feeding the beachcomber’s soul for the past 20 years with his version of the “Hot-or-Not” list for American beaches, Leatherman has undeniably built quite a reputation within his field. What began as a child’s love of sand grew into pure fascination, while answering a range of questions from beach erosion to storm impacts and even, “Where did 14,000 pounds of beach sand that replaced a shipment of French cognac come from?”

With a set of 50 rating criteria in hand, Dr. Beach sets out to evaluate his beaches. This year, Kiawah Island’s Beachwalker Park proudly stands at number seven. Imagine clean water that is perfect for canoeing and kayaking, 10 miles of sand compact enough to enjoy a ride along the surf and a boardwalk that winds through live oaks, pines and palmettos.

Lori Rackl chooses his words wisely and sums up the Kiawah Island beach experience perfectly, “It’s as close as you’ll get to a water park on Kiawah.”
