A Dream Getaway for Golfers & Gourmands
Avid golfers, surely you have a “bucket list” of courses you’d love to play in your lifetime. And foodies? You likely dream of savoring distinctive cuisine in highly acclaimed restaurants. Although it’s rare for a single destination to fulfill these two diverse passions – there is at least one notable, world-class exception.
Just 21 miles south of quaint Charleston, South Carolina is a breathtaking barrier island that offers both championship golf and award-winning dining, all nestled into a peaceful, natural setting. Meet Kiawah – voted the #2 Island in the world by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. But before you take your first swing (or your first bite!), take advantage of this valuable insider information…
Golfers: Gain an Edge
Kiawah Island Golf Resort is home to five renowned courses that have tested the mettle of the best players in the game – but you can take on the challenge, equipped with the following course-by-course pointers:
The Ocean Course | In 2021 the PGA Championship will, once again, be contested on this exceptional Pete Dye design that happens to also boast the most seaside holes of any course in North America. Player Pointer: Practice flighting your ball as low as possible. The winds can be brutal, so a low draw is preferable.
Oak Point | This month marks the course re-opening, following an extensive six-month renovation of this Clyde Johnston design. Sweeping improvements include regrassing of tees, fairways and greens with Paspalum Platinum, as well as recontoured bunkers and fairways, and tees and greens restored to their original sizes and shapes. Player Poiner: Feel comfortable hitting a driver off of most tee boxes. The renovation has opened up the landing areas, as well as approaches into the greens.
Turtle Point | This Jack Nicklaus design marks one of the longest courses on the island. Challenges come in the form of narrow fairways and strategically located water hazards and bunkers. But you’re also treated to breathtaking views, especially from the 14 green and 15 and 16 tees. Player Pointer: You’ll need to utilize every one of the clubs in your bag to conquer this course.
Osprey Point | Coming up on the one-year anniversary of its renovation by course architect Tom Fazio, players have widely praised the comprehensive improvements that returned Osprey Point to its original glory. Player Pointer: Fazio gives you a safe option on every hole. Think “risk/reward” when you tee it up.
Cougar Point | Gary Player’s Cougar Point is the perfect example of variety being the spice of life with its short and long par-4s, great risk/reward par-5s and wonderfully scenic and challenging par-3s. Player Pointer: The marsh that defines the beauty of this course changes its visual appeal every day. Try to golf it more than once.
